What
is IMT...???
What
Cars are available with this Technology in India
Technology makes our lives simpler
and convenient. It gives us control over things around us. In mobility,
improved and newer technologies make the driving experience smooth and
comfortable.
Among technologies in the automobile
sector, the automatic transmission is one of the best works of engineering and
innovation. IMT is the form of transmission that is going to enhance the
comprehensive driving experience.
We will explain IMT, its advantages,
use in Indian cars, and more in the passage. Refer and choose the Car with IMT
technology.
What is IMT?
Intelligent Manual Transmission (IMT) in layman language is a clutchless manual transmission. The accelerator pedals and the brake does not come with a clutch. IMT will be clear to you if we compare it with AMT, the most used gearbox in India.
AMT technology with motors and
actuators manage the clutch and changes gear for the driver. Software regulates
the driving and governs shift, clutch, and gear. Whereas IMT governs the only
clutch and the driver has to adjust gear manually.
Components of IMT
- Transmission gear shift lever (TGS)
- Intelligent intention sensor
- Hydraulic clutch actuator
- The electronic transmission control unit (TCU)
How does IMT work in cars?
To understand how IMT works in the
car, imagine yourself in the car equipped with the Intelligent Manual
Transmission technology. First thing first, you will
start the engine with a brake lever.
After that, shift the manual gearbox from neutral to the first gear.
Your car started, and you are on the
move, now for an upshift or downshift of the gear, the transmission gear shift
lever (TGS) will pass a signal to the transmission control unit (TCU) with the
intention sensors. Here TCU involves the hydraulic actuator to generate
hydraulic pressure.
The process causes hydraulic pressure
towards the slave cylinder through the clutch tube. This concentric slave
cylinder applies this hydraulic pressure to operate the pressure plate and the
clutch. This led to engage or disengage the clutch.
So, with IMT driver need to shift the gear lever as usual, and the clutch will function automatically conveniently.
Advantages of IMT
IMT technology is comparatively newer
in India than AMT. IMT transmission technology has some crucial benefits such
as convenience, less maintenance cost, driver’s control, mileage &
performance benefit, and overall cost-efficient.
IMT journey in India and Cars using
the technology
In 2021, there is a couple of
companies using IMT in their new and upcoming car brands. Hyundai became the
first company in India to launch Hyundai Venue with IMT transmission
technology. As per an official statement from Hyundai, their other cars will
also use IMT transmission in future.
Hyundai offers IMT transmission for
Santro and Creta cars with price addition. Currently, you can get Santro with
IMT at twenty thousand rupees extra and Creta for additional Rs. 1.76 lakhs.
Kia Motors launched Seltos with IMT
transmission technology for turbo-petrol variants.
Conclusion
IMT will have more acceptability in
the future, and it will be interesting to observe how car companies and buyers
responding to the newer technology for convenient driving.
